Education Professions Pathway
Students take all three courses between their Junior and Senior years: Principles of Teaching, Child and Adolescent Development, and Teaching and Learning in order to complete the Education Professions Pathway & earn Technical Honors in this area.
V7161 PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING
Grades 11-12
Two Semesters, 2 Credits (Dual Credit through Ivy Tech EDUC 101)

This course provides a general introduction to the field of teaching. Students will explore educational careers, teaching preparation, and professional expectations as well as requirements for teaching certification. Current trends and issues in education will be examined. Exploratory field experiences in classroom settings of a minimum 20 hours and career portfolios are required components. A standards-based plan guides the students’ field experiences. Students are monitored in their field experiences by the Education Professions teacher.
V7157 CHILD AND ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT
Grades 11-12
Two Semesters, 2 Credits (Dual credit through Ivy Tech EDUC 121)
Prerequisite: Principles of Teaching

Child and adolescent development examines the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and moral development of the child from birth through adolescence with a focus on the middle years through adolescence. Basic theories of child development, biological and environmental foundations of development, and the study of children through observation and interviewing techniques are explored. The influence of parents, peers, the school environment, culture and the media are discussed. An observation experience of up to 20 hours is required for completion of this course.

Teaching and learning provides students the opportunity to apply many of the concepts that they have learned throughout the Education Professions pathway. In addition to a focus on best practices, this course will provide an introduction to the role that technology plays in the modern classroom. Through hands-on experience with educational software, utility packages, and hardware, students will analyze ways to integrate technology as a tool for instruction, evaluation, and management.
TEACHER/OFFICE ASSISTANT
Grades 9-12
One Semester, No Credit
The Teacher Assistant program provides an opportunity for a student to work with a teacher, or work in a BNLHS office. Duties will vary given the needs of the teacher. Students who wish to enroll in the program should contact the teacher or office of their choice during the drop and add period of each term. Students who have failed two or more classes the previous term will not be approved for the program, and students may not participate as a TA more than one period of the day.
V5394 PREPARING FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS
Grade 9
One Semester, 1 Credit
In addition to exploring career options, the main goals of this class are to insure, for each student, success in the education process, improve social skills/relationships, work on reading and writing skills, and increase awareness that learning is a life-long process. Preparing for College and Careers explores life and career opportunities and assists students in developing their career plans. Students will learn the procedures, techniques, technology, and personal requirements to be successful in the different career clusters. Class projects are required (individual and group). Students may experience activities in these areas: Agriculture, Automotive Collision Repair, Automotive Services Technology, Early Childhood Education, Building Trades Technology, Cosmetology, Drafting & CAD, Electronics Technology, Engineering, Family & Consumer Science, Graphic Imaging, Healthcare Occupations, Information Technology, Precision Machine Technology, and Welding Technology. The exact experiences will be determined by availability.
STAR PLUS
Grades 9-12
STAR PLUS is a credit recovery program that permits students the opportunity to recover a credit essential for graduation.
G12 STUDY HALL
Grades 9-12

An elective Study Hall provides an opportunity for a student to have a scheduled period of the day for academic studies.

Requires an application and acceptance. All interested students should request the course and complete the application. Applications will be due no later than January 20th. Application decisions will be made by February 3rd.
The AVID 9 elective class prepares and supports students who have the desire to go to college. Students learn organizational, note-taking, and study skills; work on critical thinking, inquiry, and discussion skills; get academic help from peers and tutors; and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. The AVID 9 curriculum, based on rigorous standards, is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. Ninth grade students interested in the BNL Early College program are strongly encouraged to take AVID during their 9th grade year.
This course fulfills the Preparing for College and Careers requirement.

Prerequisite: AVID Elective in 9th grade and/or Teacher recommendation
The AVID 10 elective class is focused on equipping students with the tools to design their own futures. By providing students with a toolkit of transferable, instructional best strategies, ranging from academic skillsets to leadership development, students deepen their critical thinking and analytical skills, explore their interests and postsecondary options, and learn how to better advocate for themselves as learners. The AVID 10 elective teaches students how to study, read, write, and think like content experts, take focused notes, and manage their time effectively. Additionally, students participate in inquiry-based study groups, known as tutorials, while the other instructional time is spent on analytical writing, study-skills development, research, and college/career exploration.
