Art

Art classes tend to be project oriented. Motivating yourself to complete work is critical to success in the art department.  

ADVANCED LEVEL CLASSES CAN BE REPEATED FOR CREDIT.  YOU WILL BE WORKING ON HIGHER LEVEL PROJECTS.

G1024 ART HISTORY
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Projects will combine with art history and will vary from learning basic art techniques to research, reading and written projects.  This course is for the student that needs a fine arts credit for the Honors Diploma, but is concerned about taking a regular art course.  Talent is not necessary for this course, just a desire to learn some practical skills in art. 

G4066I  SCREEN PRINTING
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Students will learn the process and skills necessary to screen-print t-shirts and other apparel. This course will involve both single and multi-colored projects. Basics of computer graphics will be taught as it relates to print designs. Drawing skills are not necessary but do help. Students will be working in pairs and/or groups of 3-4 with projects taking 3-4 weeks to complete. 

G4066A  ADVANCED SCREEN PRINTING
Grades 10-12 
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Screen Printing
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

This course is a more in-depth study of the techniques of screen-printing. The skills of multi-color printing and computer graphics, Illustrator and Photoshop, will be the primary concern of the course with greater emphasis on the money-making aspect of screen-printing. 

G4086   YEARBOOK GRAPHICS
Grades 10-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits
Prerequisite: Written application and permission from instructor. 

Create the BNL Yearbook!  The BNL Yearbook is created and produced by students in this class.  It serves as a document that records the activities and interests of all students at BNL. This class teaches journalistic and graphic arts skills.  Seeking advertising is a requirement of the class. Grades are based on participation, quality of work, and meeting deadlines.

G4062I INTRO TO DARKROOM AND DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Students will create photographic images using a variety of tools, including 35mm SLR cameras, digital cameras, a photography darkroom, and Adobe Photoshop.

Students may supply their own 35mm SLR cameras, digital cameras, or cell phone cameras.  There will also be some available for loan for the Art Department.  Do not worry about cameras; this will be addressed the first few days of class. Students will also be expected to supply black and white darkroom photo paper, and black and white film. These will be available for purchase in the BNL Bookstore or can be purchased online. 

G4062AK ADVANCED DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Beginning Photography. 
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

If the darkroom is something that you enjoyed in Beginning Photography, then this is the class for you! Students will study techniques to improve their photography skills in the darkroom and with 35mm manual cameras. Students will be expected to supply a 35mm SLR camera, black and white darkroom photo paper, and black and white film. These will be available for purchase  in the BNL Bookstore or can be purchased online. 

G4062A ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Grades 9-12 
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Beginning Photography.
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

If you enjoyed Digital Photography and Photoshop in Beginning Photography, then this is the class for you!  You will focus on digital cameras and the use of Adobe Photoshop to work with and manipulate images. Emphasis will be on the enhancement and manipulation of photographs. Projects will include taking creative photographs, moving images from camera to computer, and working with Adobe Photoshop. This is a computer-heavy class and each class period will require computer use. Photoshop projects will range from creating simple color or black and white photographs to creating obviously manipulated computer-based images. 

Students will be expected to supply their own digital camera. Any camera will be fine: point and shoot or SLR (larger and fancier cameras). In some cases, a cell phone camera may suffice.

G4042I  METALSMITHING AND JEWELRY DESIGN 
Grades 9-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits

This is an introductory course for exploring metalworking and jewelry design as a serious form of creative expression. Focuses on the basic techniques of piercing metals, soldering, sheet metal construction, surface embellishment, mechanical joining, wire forming, stretching of sheet metals, casting, enameling and various metal finishing techniques. Students will learn basic precious metal fabrication techniques and have the opportunity to apply these skills toward the creation of artwork that reflects their personal interests.

G4044IL   INTRO TO SCULPTURE
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Students will have the opportunity to design and create three-dimensional works of art using a variety of materials such as plaster, clay, cardboard, wood, found materials, and wire.  Emphasis will be placed upon the creative use of materials, proper use of tools and various techniques in the designing of their projects.

G4044I   LIMESTONE SCULPTURE 
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Students will have the opportunity to design and create a carved relief sculpture using limestone. Emphasis will be placed upon using proper tools and techniques in the designing and making of projects.  If time allows, students will also create other three-dimensional works of art using a variety of materials.

G4044AL   ADVANCED LIMESTONE SCULPTURE
Grades 10-12
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Limestone
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

This course is for students with a serious interest in stone sculpture. The student must demonstrate a high degree of skill level in designing, carving and finishing of projects.  

G4040I   CERAMICS
Grades 9-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits

This is an introductory course in handbuilding, wheel throwing, figurative sculpture, and glaze application. Students will learn proper ceramic construction methods and have opportunities to apply these techniques to a wide range of functional and decorative projects. Projects will be open ended, allowing students to incorporate a variety of personal interests and styles.

Grades 9-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits

This course begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of drawing. Basic elements and techniques of landscape, portrait, and interior drawing will be covered. Drawing is for the students that can’t draw but wish they could. The student will learn how to develop the skills necessary to draw anything and everything. Talent is not necessary, just a willingness to try.

G4044L ADVANCED SCULPTURE  
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Sculpture and Mixed Media 
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

Students will continue to gain new skills and build on previous experiences in plaster, clay, cardboard, found materials, wood, wire, and metal. Emphasis will be placed on craftsmanship, comprehension, creativity, and composition throughout the planning and execution of each project. Students will engage in constructive conversation about their artwork and expand their vocabulary while learning about aesthetic choices as they relate to the Elements and Principles of Art and Design. 

G4060A   ADVANCED DRAWING
Grade Level: 10-12   
One Semester, 1 credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Drawing
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

This class is for students with a serious interest in drawing.  At this level, students will be drawing more from their own ideas with emphasis on drawing from life and building a portfolio.  Projects may take several weeks to complete and students will have the opportunity to use various media. 

 
G4046A  TEXTILES, DYEING, AND FIBER ARTS
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

An introduction to textiles and fiber-related techniques and concepts. This course investigates a variety of materials and processes including dyeing, embroidery, mixed media assemblage, 3D fiber construction, and felting, emphasizing the expressive potential of each of these techniques through demonstrations and critiques.


G4060I   PAINTING 
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit

Students will be exposed to various painting styles and techniques and will have the opportunity to paint onto various surfaces.  The student should be self-motivated due to the amount of independent work, but also be willing to work in a group setting.  Projects may take several weeks to complete. 

G4064A   ADVANCED  PAINTING
Grades 9-12
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Painting
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

This class is for students with a serious interest in painting. At this level, students will be painting more from their own ideas with emphasis on exploring new painting styles and building a portfolio. Projects may take several weeks to complete and students will have the opportunity to use various media. 

G4046A ADVANCED TEXTILES, DYEING, AND FIBER ARTS
Grades 9-12  
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite:  Students must have completed Textiles, Dyeing, and Fiber Arts
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

Students will build upon the skills obtained in Textiles 1 as they experiment with the capabilities of fabric as an artistic medium. Students will investigate and design projects that reflect individual areas of special interest within the medium. 

G4040A   ADVANCED CERAMICS 
Grades 9-12 
Two Semester, 2 Credits
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Ceramics. 
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

Students will build on the construction techniques acquired in their introductory Ceramics course. Students will gain experience in glaze mixing and proper firing practices. Second semester will be more choice based for advanced students and allow them to tailor their projects to their personal areas of interest. 

G4042A  ADVANCED METALSMITHING AND JEWELRY DESIGN
Grades 9-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design. 
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

Students will increase their technical ability in basic metalsmithing techniques such as wire forming, sheet metal fabrication, cold and hot joining techniques, casting, enamelling and a variety of surface treatments.

G4004I   STAINED GLASS
Grades 9-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits

The students will explore the beginning process of stained-glass. Glass cutting, grinding, soldering, and the copper foil technique will be taught.  After the introductory project, students will have the opportunity to design and create their own project in glass.  The ability to draw is not necessary. 

Students will be expected to supply a roll of lead-free stained-glass solder.  This can be purchased from the BNL bookstore, from online stained-glass businesses, or locally from Hobby Lobby of Bloomington.

G4004A   ADVANCED STAINED GLASS 
Grades 10-12
Two Semester, 2 Credits
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Stained Glass
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

The student will continue to work on and improve their technique as well as explore other options in glass design. Students will have the opportunity to design original works.  Students will explore other options in class including the copper foil, lead-free came, and hot glass techniques.

Students will be expected to supply a roll of lead-free stained-glass solder.  This can be purchased from the BNL bookstore, from online stained-glass businesses, or locally from Hobby Lobby of Bloomington.

G4082I   COMPUTER GRAPHICS
Grades 10-12 
One Semester, 1 Credit

This class is designed for the student who is interested in learning graphic design skills on the computer.  The student will learn techniques in both raster and vector-based programs.  Working with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the student will be involved in the design and production of both individual and school-related projects.  Areas covered in this class will be photo manipulation, vector graphics, and graphic design.  This class is highly recommended if the student is planning on taking Graphic Design and Layout at the North Lawrence Career Center.

G4082A    ADVANCED COMPUTER GRAPHICS 
Grades 10-12
One Semester, 1 Credit
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Computer Graphics.
Students can take multiple years of this class and receive credit.

This course is designed for the student interested in developing stronger computer graphic skills in Photoshop. Skills in other graphic programs such as Illustrator will also be explored in more depth. Greater emphasis will be placed on design skills and creative thought at this level. Efforts will also be made to involve the student in real life graphic projects in the school and community when possible.
